Return to Vancouver, bye to Helena and on to Seattle

Saturday, 21st August 2010
After another crummy breakfast at the Bird and Breakfast, we packed up and set off for Victoria. We stopped off at Grice Bay which was steeped in mist with herons charismatically outlined against it. A further stop outside Alberni to visit Cathedral Creek where massive 800 hundred year old Douglas Firs stand was impressive.

The Victoria area is very popular for the return trip to Vancouver through the San Juan Islands and we couldnt find a good campsite to spend the night, so ended up in the State Park on a rock hard pitch, but it only cost $10 so shouldnt grumble really.

Sunday 22nd August 2010
Explored Sidney which is a lovely floral clapperboard town, then caught the 12.30 ferry back to Vancouver – the trip is amazing, definately the best route to travel.
In Vancouver, we stopped at a bird reserve, but this was really just a large dog toilet so we booked in at the Best Western and went to the Greek Restaurant for a fab meal to celebrate the end of our Canada leg.

Monday 23rd August 2010
After a lovely slow breakfast at the famous ‘Elbow Room’ where the gay owners insult the customers (lots of celebrities have visited such as Sly Stallone &, David Duchovny) we parted company with Helena who had, unfortunately got to fly back to England and work.

We were supposed to be going by Amtrak train to Seattle, but when we arrived at the train station, we found we had booked tickets from Vancou ver, Washington to Seattle – we didnt even know there was a Vancouver in Washington! With 7 minutes to spare, we managed to leg it to the Amtrak bus, throw all our luggage in the hold and take up the last available seats on the bus! Phew!

Seattle is in the most gorgeous location and the centre was just like ‘Frasier’. The rail network took us straight to the airport to pick up the hire car, then strauight to Hotel for the evening. We availed ourselves of room service – Pizza, Salad and Wine, and watched Grease on the TV – aaah, bliss!
